A docile hawk with distinctive barred chest and a crest. Has aerobatic flight and hunts primarily in tree foliage for insects and tree frogs. Will also take small birds, nestlings and small fruit such as figs.

Found commonly in the tropics and it is increasing its range southward in New South Wales.
