Type:

Large and slender-bodied hawk with broad head and long legs. Hunts terrestrial birds, small mammals, reptiles, and large insects; rarely eats carrion. The only harrier to nest in trees.

Found throughout Australia except in thick forests, and rarely in Tasmania. Also found in Sulawesi and Lesser Sunda Islands. May migrate northwards from southern areas after breeding, depending on seasonal conditions.
