Heavier build than the Spotted Harrier, a solitary hawk that often perches and roosts on the ground. Nests on the ground or in reeds over water.  Feeds on mammals, birds (often waterbirds) and their eggs, amphibians, fish, insects and carrion.

Found throughout Australia near waterways and wetlands. Migrates northwards from southern areas after breeding.
